• Deforestation is the destruction or removal of forests and natural vegetation. The removal of these forests is then converted to a non-forest use. The destruction of these forests are then converted to urban areas, agricultural areas and timber for wood due to demanding companies and people. Excessive use of groundwater, building of dams and climate change are also causes of deforestation and examples of man-made deforestation. Sometimes deforestation can occur naturally due to disasters, extreme natural events or bush fires.
• Usually when forests are destroyed, companies plants only one or two species of trees to make up for what they removed. Certain animals need a specific tree to live or raise a family. When humans plant only one single tree, it might be hard for them to adapt, ultimately causing extinction. The removal of these trees can also cause species to have difficulties reproducing.
• Deforestation has destroyed the natural habitat of many species causing a rapid decrease in their population. Specific plants are also at risk of extinction if they are destroyed. The harsh chemicals released by the heavy machinery used to cut the trees down can be very harmful to all species living there.
• One specie that is endangered due to deforestation is the ring-tailed Lemur. Lemurs are found in Madagascar, and because the human population is rapidly increasing in Madagascar, companies are clearing the forests and the lemur’s natural habitat.
• Orangutans are endangered due to the exploitation of their natural habitat. . Orangutans are found in Indonesia and Malaysia on the islands of Sumatra and Borneo. Their homes are being replaced with palm trees so people gain palm oil leaving them homeless. This Palm oil is often used in chocolate and KFC. It is also hard for them to adapt to new environment.
